the Indian Navy with Inmarsat’s Fleet Broadband Solution on Board the first ever Solo
Circumnavigation of the Globe carried out by Cmdr Dilip Donde for the prestigious project
titled "Sagar Parikrama". The ambitious project puts India on the world map both
in terms of quality Yacht construction as well as the ability to take on a task that many
have dreamt of and few have completed successfully. The 56 ft Yacht, “Mhadei” designed in Netherlands and constructed at Goa was handed over to the Indian Navy on 12th February’ 2009. The boat and her skipper have been put through a rigorous training & trials program since then, sailing over 6500 Nm including over 2300 Nm of non-stop solo sailing. The circumnavigation will commence on 19th Aug 2009 from Mumbai. Less than 300 people have managed to complete a Solo Circumnavigation so far and no Indian has ever attempted it. A Solo Circumnavigation and that too through the Southern Ocean, presents a unique set of challenges and is often compared to climbing the Everest. To meet the requirements of not passing through Canals, a boat has to pass south of the continents of Australia, America and Africa which are known for very strong winds and swell throughout the year and this makes it all the more important for the Boat to have a Robust Communications Infrastructure to provide Connectivity across the Globe for managing Navigational and Personal Communication Requirements.
